Who Owns Science? Bayer Foundation at Berlin Science Week 2021
On November 5th & 6th 2021, we were really happy to be part of a memorable Berlin Science Week hosted by Falling Walls Foundation in which we got to interact with the general public, meet our fantastic partners, and host a really insightful panel discussion on Who Owns Science?
Over two vibrant days, the Bayer Foundation team and partners chatted and exchanged ideas with excited guests at the Museum für Naturkunde (Natural History Museum). It was great to finally meet so many intelligent and creative people in person again, and to share our vision for a world with Health for All and Hunger for None.
As we start to explore the relationship between science and society at Bayer Foundation, we were excited to close our time at Berlin Science Week by asking a question that is fundamental to how science can provide the most benefit for society in the future: Who Owns Science?
Our brilliant panelists Jutta Allmendinger, a leading social scientist and member of the G7 Gender Equality Advisory Council, Jola Pospech, a brilliant chemist and research group leader at Leibniz-Institute for Catalysis, and Christian Rommel, Head of Pharmaceutical Research & Development at Bayer, shared their views on the interplay between science and society. Professional science communicator Theo Anagnostopoulos, an elected National Geographic Explorer, guided us through the discussion with humor and laser sharp focus. This diverse group of experts shared their insights into how science can be guided by the people of today, both young and old, as well as from many different backgrounds and perspectives, not just scientists. They also discussed important topics such as fake news, information overload and whether open data is a blessing or a curse. Find out what they said by watching the recording below.

Who owns Science? at Berlin Science Week 2021
From all of us at Bayer Foundation, we want to say a big thank you to our partners, who were with us at the Berlin Science Week Campus. Each of you played a big part in making it a success and we look forward to many inspiring interactions again next year!
About: Berlin Science Week
Every year Falling Walls Foundation organises the Berlin Science Week where for 10 days, scientists, innovators, engagers, and forward-thinkers as well as organisations come together to share their insights into hot topics, hold important discussions on the grand challenges of our time, and provide a glimpse into the future.
More than 20,000 people met across 200 on-site and digital events, engaging in a diverse programme with a wide range of topics including Planetary Health & Sustainability, Health & Wellbeing, Tech & Engineering Innovations and Art & Science.
On 5/6 November, Berlin Science Week Campus at the Natural History Museum in Berlin hosted over 30 workshops, talks and exhibitions, and for two days became the place to be for anyone with an interest in science.
We are excited to share that Berlin Science Week will return from 1 – 10 November 2022.
